Debt ceiling standoff round up

Oy.

  • Forty-three Senate Republicans signed a letter saying they oppose Reid's bill. And yes, one of those senators was Sen. John McCain, the same guy whom the media was applauding earlier this week for getting his maverick on because he compared teabaggers to hobbits. 'Cause nothing says "maverick" like crashing the economy for the sake of politics.
  • The once and future Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi gave a kick-ass speech on the floor of the House today:
?The Speaker chose, when he didn?t have the votes, instead of to reach out in a bipartisan way to see how we could work together, he chose to go to the dark side," Pelosi said to disapproval from Republicans in the chamber. [...]

"Let me repeat. And I repeat, he chose to go to the dark side by putting forth a bill that he himself told his Members [it] would sink in the Senate?and I add, lead to default, lead to default. We cannot default. We are the greatest country that ever existed in the history of the world."

  • However, as expected, the House voted down Reid's bill, with an assist from 11 Democrats, including disgraced Rep. David Wu.
  • Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid were summoned to the White House. Following the meeting, Reid said, "The question is, are we closer to an agreement. The answer is 'no.'" So that's, you know, encouraging.
  • Meanwhile, Mitch McConnell and John Boehner held a press conference to announce that they are "confident" there will be a resolution to the debt ceiling standoff. They also tried to lay blame squarely at the foot of the president with this nonsense:
?He?s the leader of the Democratic party and the President of the United States,? McConnell said. ?He needs to tell us what he?ll sign.?

Newsflash, fellas: the president has said he'd sign the Reid bill. Any other stupid questions?

  • Boehner also met with two or three dozen moderates, "who told him they want a debt-limit deal that attracts a broad swath of Republicans, not just Democrats and a handful of centrists." This, of course, begs the question, "There are moderates in the House?"
  • And for you night owls out there, the Senate is holding its cloture vote on Reid's bill at 1:01 AM ET.

As Hunter noted yesterday: So yeah, we're screwed. We're governed by children.

New poll shows support for recalling Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder behind, but gaining

fire-rick-snyder
Public Policy Polling, 7/21-24, 593 Michigan voters, MoE 4 (March numbers in parenthesis)
Would you support or oppose recalling Rick Snyder from office before his term is up?

Oppose: 47 (49)
Support: 42 (38)
Note sure: 11 (13)

While those opposed to recall are still a plurality, support for recall is gaining. What was once a double-digit deficit is down to only five. Further, recall gained support even though Snyder's net approval actually went up to -12. In March, Snyder's net approval was -17.

Barring a more dramatic improvement in Snyder's approval rating, support for recall will continue to grow. People might be wary about holding a recall election only a few months after the previous election, but those concerns will fade with time. By early 2012, when Snyder has been an unpopular governor for over a year, I think it's safe to say those favoring recall will take the lead.

FireRickSnyder.org can continue to collect signatures all the way through late October, 180 days after the petition was approved on April 29. When they file with the Secretary of State, they need 806,522 signatures that were collected within 90 days of the date when they make the filing. While this means that some of the signatures they collected in May and June will not end up in the final total, the overall pace of gathering signatures has sharply increased.

Goal Thermometer

For example, last weekend, more than 5,000 signatures were gathered in one day in Ann Arbor. Further, between 50,000 and 75,000 signatures were collected statewide in the first two weeks of July. Looking ahead, in September teachers and college students will begin circulating petitions at work and on campus.

While FireRickSnyder.org doesn't have much money, they do have a lot of volunteers. To be precise, as of Thursday night they had 5,094 volunteers, thanks in large part to the Daily Kos community. This makes them very well funded in terms of human capitol.

As the recall campaign continues to ramp up for another two months of signature gathering, they are installing a new online management system. This system will allow their 80 county captains to each personally organize their local share of those 5,094 volunteers. It costs $6,300.

FireRickSnyder.org is now on the Daily Kos Michigan Recall Fund page, so please chip in $4 today.

Daily Kos Elections Weekend Digest

Is Virginia becoming a blue state?

With virtually all of the attention in the political world devoted to matters of debt and DC haggling, it'd be forgiveable for one to think that there was no other political news this week.

To be sure, the political countretemps in DC spilled over to the world of polling and electoral news this week, with new polling suggesting that there are, truly, few winners in this latest round of fisticuffs between the president and the Republican contingent on the Hill.

That said, there was a little bit of good polling news this week for President Obama. He still appears to be holding his own in two key states in his 2008 coalition, and the GOP field still appears undefined and underwhelming. Add to that a couple of more states that edged closer to clarifying their 2012 maps, and there was at least some electoral chatter worth perusing.

So, with that in mind, head to the other side of the jump for the week that was on the campaign trail, in a (mostly) debt ceiling-free edition of the weekend digest.

GOP Sen. Thune: Tweaked Reid Plan Probably Won?t Be Filibustered, Could Pass House

Appearing this afternoon on Fox News, Sen. John Thune (R-SC) said that if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) brings his debt ceiling plan up, it will get a vote in the Senate. In other words, enough Republicans would support Reid to prevent a filibuster. Thune also suggested that, if the Reid plan was “strengthened” [...]

Boehner Tries to Get Plan Back on Track

If the House does pass the Boehner plan, Democrats will be forced to vote in favor of another extension before the 2012 election. If the Boehner plan fails, they likely won?t. That safeguard (and the electoral pain it brings) has lots of appeal on the GOP side.

Wynn Is Right: Obama Is Killing the Economy

Iain Murray, Am Spectator
Among the long string of bad economic news from the last few years, there is something to celebrate: The political consensus in Washington that government could keep on growing at no cost to the growing economy has finally broken down. The size and scope of government is now the defining issue of our time. It is a welcome debate. However, it has centered on spending, which is only part of what government does. Regulation and tax policy are equally important.Legendary entrepreneur Steve Wynn (who usually supports Democrats) put it bluntly a few days ago, when he said: "[T]his...
