?You can?t be calling Bernanke a traitor and you can?t be questioning whether or not Barack Obama loves America, that type of thing,? said Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.).
But King also said that if Perry "tones it down slightly" he has the "biggest potential to capitalize on" Obama's "lack of leadership." Meanwhile, Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK), also equivocated, saying Perry is a rookie who has been playing "Triple-A ball until now" but:
?Perry does a really good job of capturing the anger and angst of Republican primary voters right now and he?s got a good record to run on,? added Cole.
Cole added that there was no reason to pick sides in the GOP primary because "you don?t want to inadvertently alienate your own activists."
Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) expressed similar consternation about Perry's Bernanke comments, saying "that?s not something you want to lead with if you?re trying to get independents." But Roskam added that Perry?s "great strength is going to be the jobs argument."
But despite their concerns, none of the Republicans interviewed by Jonathan Martin and Jake Sherman for the article would rule out supporting Perry. As an anonymous midwestern member of Congress told the Politico reporters:
?He is not my type, but I suspect I have a lot of constituents who will like him,? said one moderate Midwestern Republican of Perry.
It's a similar story with Republicans in the financial sector:
"The professional investor, the Wall Street force, is much more comfortable with an establishment candidate," said billionaire investor Ken Fisher, chief executive of Fisher Investments in Woodside, California.
But:
Fisher expects they would eventually back Perry or any nominee who emerges with a good chance of defeating Obama, who is seen by many in the business community as unfriendly to the investor community and too pro-regulation.
And that's really the key. They want to beat Obama. They hate Obama more than they hate anything else in the world. And their concern about Perry isn't what Perry does or doesn't believe, or what Perry will or will not do. It's whether they think another Texas cowboy can take the White House. They don't care if their nominee is a lunatic. They just care about whether he can win.
