Weekly address: Obama moves past debt debate, focuses on jobs, tax credits, trade deals

I?m going to keep calling on both parties in Congress to put aside their differences and send these bills to my desk so I can sign them right away. After all, both parties share power. Both parties share responsibility for our progress. Moving our economy and our country forward is not a Democratic or a Republican responsibility; it is our responsibility as Americans.

Pressing on to the promised pivot to jobs, President Obama moved quickly through acknowledging the debt limit compromise to focusing on jobs?and a surprising emphasis on how international crises (tsunamis, Arab Spring, earthquakes) as well as the "contentious" debt debate for the nation's unemployment.

The president gave a list of specifics he'd like to see as we move forward as a nation:

  • Extend tax cuts for working and middle-class families
  • Tax credits for returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan
  • Continuing to support unemployment benefits
  • Cut red tape for inventors and entrepreneurs
  • Pass trade deals to open up Asian and South American markets to American-made goods
  • Put out-of-work construction workers back to work by loaning to companies that will work on rebuilding infrastructure

The full transcript can be found beneath the fold and on the White House website.
